The three defensible space zones

0–5 ft: Immediate zone

Nothing that burns. Clear needles and leaves from the roof, gutters and the ground against the house; move firewood, mulch and flammable plants away from the walls; empty out the space under decks.

5–30 ft: Intermediate zone

Break the ladder. Thin dense groups of trees, remove the brush growing under them and limb trees up 6–10 feet so a ground fire can't climb into the canopy.

30–100 ft: Extended zone

Slow it down. Remove dead trees and heavy ground debris, take out small trees crowding mature ones and break up continuous brush so fire can't run.

Current offers

  • Up to $500 off your total project, with haul-away covered on multi-day acreage jobs. Leaving equipment on site saves us the trips, so you get the savings.
  • Up to $250 off your first tree removal. Now that we have a climber in-house, we want to show you what that means.
  • Broadcast chipping discount when you let us spread the chips on your property. It keeps our saws cutting instead of driving to the green-waste yard.
  • Travel covered on two-day bookings in outlying areas like Skull Valley, the Verde Valley and Stoneman Lake.

How it works

Call, or send the short form. Two minutes, and you can attach the insurance or fire department notice if you have one.

Free Firewise inspection

A firefighter walks the property with you and looks at it the way a fire would: where it comes from, what it climbs, what it reaches. We photograph what needs work, so you have it for your insurer too.

Frequently asked questions

Who does defensible space work in Prescott, AZ?

Arizona Defensible Space (formerly Arrow Fire & Land Management) creates defensible space, thins forest fuels and removes hazard trees across Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley and the rest of Northern Arizona. About 90% of the crew are active wildland firefighters.

How much does defensible space cost in Prescott?

It depends on slope, density and how much fuel is there, more than on lot size. Small jobs can be booked at an hourly maintenance rate; larger lots and acreage are priced by the day or the acre after a free Firewise inspection. Estimates are free and guaranteed within 48 hours.

What areas do you serve?

The Prescott Quad City area (Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley and Dewey-Humboldt), plus Paulden, Williamson Valley and Skull Valley, the Verde Valley (Jerome, Clarkdale, Cottonwood, Sedona), Flagstaff and Stoneman Lake. We take large projects anywhere in Northern Arizona, including state and agency work and post-fire cleanup.

G&S (GNS) closed. Who can take over my defensible space or tree work?

Arizona Defensible Space can. We work across Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley and Northern Arizona, and we're taking on former G&S customers now (G&S is commonly known as GNS). Start with a free Firewise inspection and you'll have a written estimate within 48 hours.

Are you insured?

Yes. We carry an insurance program built for land and fire work, which is what lets us take municipal, HOA and state contracts. We're happy to send a certificate of insurance with your estimate.

Can you help with an insurance non-renewal or fire inspection?

Yes. Send us the notice or inspection report and we'll scope the work to it, then document what was done so you can submit it to your insurer.

Do you offer free Firewise inspections?

Yes. Every estimate starts with a free Firewise inspection: a full walk around the property with photos of what needs work. HOAs get a free community and common area risk assessment.

When is the best time to trim pine trees in Northern Arizona?

Late fall through winter. Bark beetles are inactive in cold weather, so fresh cuts don't attract them, and dead limbs come down before snow loads break them.
